NUMBER
The St. Martin Parish School Board shall be composed of ten (10) members, each elected by qualified voters residing within each of the respective special election districts for St. Martin Parish. Each district shall encompass the geographic and demographic areas fixed by the St. Martin Parish School Board for School Board member election purposes. An official map showing each election district shall be made available for viewing during normal business hours at the School Board office.
Every candidate for election must at the time of qualification as a candidate have obtained the age of eighteen (18), resided in the state for the preceding two (2) years, and have actually been domiciled for the preceding year in the district for which he/she seeks election. The term domiciled shall mean a person's principal or habitual place of residence. However, at the next regular election for members of the School Board following a reapportionment, a person may qualify as a candidate in any district created in whole, or part, from a district existing prior to reapportionment, provided he/she was domiciled in prior district for at least one year immediately preceding his/her qualification and had been a resident of the state for two (2) years immediately preceding the qualification.
The seat of any member who changes his/her domicile from the district he/she represents, or if elected after reapportionment, whose domicile is not within the district he/she represents at the time he/she is sworn into office, shall be vacated.
The St. Martin Parish School Board shall reapportion itself every ten years, based upon the latest federal decennial census, so that each member shall represent as nearly as possible the same number of persons.
