TOBACCO-FREE SCHOOLS
The St. Martin Parish School Board shall prohibit the use of any tobacco products by students, employees, or visitors in all buildings, centers, offices, vehicles, schools, or other property under the jurisdiction of the School Board.
The use of any tobacco product, smokeless tobacco, or any smoking object/device, including but not limited to electronic cigarettes, advanced personal vaporizers, vape pens, vape mods and similar devices, shall be prohibited on and in all School Board property and vehicles, and at all school-sponsored or school-approved functions. However, this prohibition shall not be applicable to any tobacco product approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for sale as a tobacco cessation product and which is marketed and sold solely for such purpose.
School Board property shall include any elementary or secondary school buildings or grounds, buildings, portable buildings, field houses, stadiums, equipment storage areas, vacant land, or any other property owned, operated, or leased by the School Board.
The Tobacco-Free Schools policy is intended to promote the general welfare of all employees, students, and visitors and to sever as an example to students that the use of tobacco products is strongly discouraged.
IMPLEMENTATION PLAN
Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal of employees, or for visitors, being banned from School Board property. Students shall be disciplined as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct.
La. Rev. Stat. Ann. §40:1291.22 provides that employees and non-employees may be subject to a citation and summons from any law enforcement official.
Communication of the policy shall include the following:
Copies of the policy shall be distributed to all current employees.
New employees shall be provided copies of the policy as they sign up through Human Resources Department.
“No Tobacco Use” signs shall be posted at the entrance of every school and work site as well as athletic, other outside areas, and appropriate areas determined by the Superintendent of site administrator to include but not limited to all other buildings owned by the School Board.
A message about the Tobacco-Free School policy from the Superintendent shall be sent to the parents of every student.
A notice shall be posted on the School Board’s website.
